What is an email domain?

An email domain is the part of an email address that comes after the @ symbol. In hello@rovela.dev, the email domain is rovela.dev. Understanding it matters because a business that uses its own domain name for email looks more credible, owns its addresses, and can switch providers without changing how it is reached.

The anatomy of an email address

Every email address has two parts separated by @. The part to the left — the local part — identifies a specific mailbox. The part to the right — the email domain — identifies which mail server to deliver to. When you send a message, your mail client looks up the MX records for that domain in DNS to find the right server.

Provider domain vs. your own domain

Provider domain (e.g. gmail.com)

Free to use, but the domain belongs to the provider. If the provider shuts down or you want to move, you lose the addresses. It also signals a personal rather than business use.

Your own domain (e.g. yourcompany.com)

You register the domain and keep it regardless of which email service you use. Every address at that domain is yours. Switching providers means updating DNS records, not changing addresses.

Why businesses use a custom email domain

  1. 01

    Looks professional

Customers and partners trust hello@yourcompany.com more than yourcompany@gmail.com. It signals that the business is established and that you own the brand.

  2. 02

    You keep the addresses

Because the domain is yours, no provider can take the addresses away. Staff can keep their company email indefinitely, even if the hosting changes.

  3. 03

    Easier to deliver

Custom domains can publish SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records that prove messages are genuine. This improves deliverability and reduces spam filtering at the recipient's end.

  4. 04

    One domain, many mailboxes

A single domain like yourcompany.com can host unlimited addresses — hello@, support@, billing@, each person's name — all routing through one provider.

How to get a custom email domain

  1. 01

    Register a domain

Buy a domain name from any registrar — Cloudflare, Namecheap, GoDaddy, or your local provider. A .com typically costs $10–15 a year.

  2. 02

Add it to an email provider

Sign up with a business email service (like Rovela) and add your domain. The provider gives you the DNS records to publish.

  3. 03

    Add the DNS records

In your domain registrar's DNS panel, add the MX record (tells the internet where your mail server is), SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records. Most providers give you exact values to copy.

  4. 04

    Create mailboxes

Once DNS propagates — usually minutes, sometimes up to 48 hours — you can create addresses like you@yourcompany.com and start sending and receiving.

Frequently asked

Do I need to own a domain to get a business email address?
Yes — a business email address uses a domain you control. You can register one from any domain registrar, often for under $15 a year. Once you have it, adding email takes a few DNS records.
Can I use a domain I already own?
Yes. If you already have a website domain, you can use the same domain for email. The registrar's DNS panel is where you add the MX, SPF, and DKIM records your email provider gives you.
What is an MX record?
An MX (Mail Exchanger) record is a DNS entry that tells the internet which server handles email for your domain. Without one, nobody can send you mail at that domain.
How long does it take to set up?
Adding the DNS records takes about 5 minutes. Propagation — the time it takes for DNS to update across the internet — is usually under an hour, though it can take up to 48 hours in rare cases.
Is a free business email domain really free?
Rovela's free plan includes one domain, five mailboxes, and 1 GiB of storage at no cost and with no time limit. You still pay the registrar for the domain name itself (typically $10–15/year), but the email service is free.

Get a business email on your domain
